The legislative update revises rules related to plugs, sockets, and electrical safety. The statutory instrument was submitted to UK Parliament on July 17, just one day after ministers approved it. A key element is the narrow exception allowing qualifying generation devices to connect via standard household plugs, provided they are verified by a notified body to comply with BS 1363 standards. These approval protocols apply across the UK, covering England, Wales, and Scotland.
The interim standard specifies detailed requirements for wiring, mounting, fire protection, labels, and user instructions. A technical study tested representative plug-in solar products on domestic electrical systems, confirming stable operation under controlled conditions. Researchers observed no sustained unsafe energization or excessive heat effects. Variations in export controls, electromagnetic compatibility, and overall product quality were also identified. Public consultation supports regulated market access
A public consultation attracted 466 responses from businesses, technical experts, regulators, and members of the public. Over 85% endorsed the interim product specifications, with most supporting the proposed plug-in solar amendment. Concerns raised included older household wiring, products lacking proper approval, and the need for clearer guidance distinguishing between plug-in solar panels and plug-in batteries. The final framework excludes storage devices from the approved connection route.
Retailers have prepared for the new category of products ahead of the August implementation. This category includes small solar kits suitable for balconies, gardens, and other outdoor spaces, offering an alternative for homes unable to install traditional rooftop panels. Systems using the new plug-in method cannot operate legally before August 27. From that date, only approved products within the 800-watt limit can connect via standard household sockets. The June total capacity does not include installations made under this new framework.
